Saturday 18th May 2019 – Open Day at St George’s Church, Court Farm Road, Hove, 10am – 1pm.

This is an opportunity to see the 22 paintings that John has painted on Biblical themes for St George’s Church. John will be there to talk about his work, together with Balavendra Elias who will be talking about his 23 carvings in elm and yew wood, including large works carved from a whole tree trunk.

All these works are featured in the book published to record the artworks, entitled “Paintings and Sculptures at St George’s Church, Hangleton”, and published by Ivory Publications.

John is currently showing work at the Naked Eye Gallery, Western Road Brighton,

and with the Anglo-French group Changez d’Art, made up of artists from Normamdie and Sussex, at the Crypt Gallery in Seaford until 9th may 2019.

During April 2019 John will be also showing work with the Society of Sussex Painters, Sculptors and Printmakers at the Grange Gallery Rottingdean, and with the Brighton and Hove Arts Council exhibition at the Friends meeting House Brighton, in the Lanes.

The SSP exhibition will run from 2 – 29 April, with a Private View on Wednesday 3rd April from 5.30 – 7.30pm.

The BHAC exhibition runs from 10-13 April, with a Private View on Wednesday 10th from 5.30 – 7.30pm.

John has four landscape paintings now on show at the Naked Eye Gallery, 31a Western Road, Hove BN3 2JQ.

The gallery is in the basement, and there is a good cafe on the second floor.

 

John took part in a cross channel exhibition in October at Bourgtheroulde Normandy with Changez d’Art, a group based in Normandy. Next year Changez d’Art will presenting a large international exhibition at the Casino in Rouen in September 2019.

 

 

2018 John had abstract and landscapes on show with the Society of Sussex Painters, Sculptors and Printmakers at Skyway Gallery, Shoreham by sea from 2-22 September 2018.

Open day at St George’s Church Hove, East Sussex, Sunday 15 May 2016, from 1 – 5pm was a great success.

This unique church contains over 20 paintings by John Armstrong, and 20 carvings by Balavendra Elias, three examples of her ceramic work by Romola Jane, and the Dalle de Verre east window made by the monks of Buckfast Abbey, Devon.

John was at the church to answer questions about his paintings, together with woodcarver Balavendra Elias who was talking about his carvings. Visitors to the church all agreed that this should become a regular event.

2016   John currently has work on show in the Rendezvous cafe, Duke Street, Brighton, until September 2016.

2016  John showed landscapes and religious work at the Brighton and Hove Arts Council exhibition at Friends Meeting House Brighton, 20-24 April 2016.

2016  John also showed work with the Society of Sussex Painters at the Studio Gallery Worthing Museum and Art gallery, 9 -24 April 2016.

2015  John showed work with the Society of Sussex Painters’ exhibition at the Hawth, Crawley, West Sussex, December 2015-January 2016.

2015  John showed abstract and landscapes at the Society of Sussex Painters’ exhibition at the Grange Gallery Rottingdean Brighton, September 2015.

2014  John showed work in a group exhibition with the Society of Sussex Painters, at the Laughing Dog Gallery at Brighton Marina from 17th – 31st October 2014.

2014  John had an abstract painting entitled Nativity 1 in the Christian Arts exhibition “One Equall Light” based on the sacred poems and sermons of John Donne. The exhibition was at two venues in London, St James Church Piccadilly, and St Giles Church Cripplegate. John’s work was in St James church, and was on show from 2 – 20th July 2014..

2014  John has also had five landscape paintings on show in a group exhibition in Worthing, Sussex, presented by the Society of Sussex Painters. The exhibition ran from 12 – 26 July 2014.

New book about John’s paintings

IVORY PUBLICATIONS has brought out a book about the paintings and sculptures in St George’s Church, Hangleton, Hove. This book shows 54 photographs of the paintings by John Armstrong and the woodcarvings by Balavendra Elias, together with two ceramic sculptures by Romola Jane and a dalle de verre window by the monks of Buckfast Abbey. 2012  LLITTLEHAMPTON “HARVEST” EXHIBITION John is showing three paintings at Littlehampton Museum’s Autumn exhibition. The exhibition runs from Saturday 14th September to Friday 1st November.

2012 WELLS CATHEDRAL EXHIBITION

John and Helen are currently showing works in an exhibition at Wells Cathedral, Somerset, organised by Christian Arts. The exhibition runs from Saturday 8 – Friday 21st September 2012. About the artist

John Armstrong NDD ATC, born September 1937, trained as a painter and teacher at art schools in Swindon, Walthamstow and Brighton. Taught art and crafts in schools, worked in museums in Hove and Lewes, and at the Exhibitions Unit, University of Brighton Gallery. John is married to fellow artist Helen Armstrong and they have three sons and two daughters.

Work in churches includes Great Altar Crucifix at St Peters parish church, Brighton; Great Hanging Crucifix at St Boniface Tooting, London; a cycle of sixteen paintings at St Georges, Hove; and an eight figure Reredos at St Marys, Bath.

Contributed landscape illustrations to two “How to Paint” books by Gerald Woods; written articles for national design magazines; member of local, national and international art societies. Prizewinner of Laing competitions at the Mall Galleries, London, 1982, 2000.

A painting, ‘Hove Beach’, commissioned as Hove’s wedding present to Prince Charles, is now in the Royal Collection at Highgrove. Paintings are also in private collections in England, Belgium, Singapore, Australia, at Hove Museum of Art, the collections of East Sussex County Council and Nuffield Foundation, London.
